Blog Prompt: Changing the World One Click at a Time?

I lean more towards Malcom Gladwell's view that these are "weak connections." Sure the information can be disseminated to large groups of people, but it's hard to gain the commitment it takes to create effective social change from weak connections. The Black Lives Matter and Women's March are impressive, but I fear for their longevity and for the focus of their discourse. I think weak connections are great for creating an initial stir but social change is a long process and it takes focus and dedication. The Black Lives Matter movement may have more success because of the black neighborhoods in which these digital relationships are also personal by proximity. Whereas the Women's March is such a large movement that it rose awareness but it's going to be harder to repeat and to focus on tasks that can create change. A hybrid of connections is important, social media is a great tool to get everyone on the same page but those personal relationships are what keep people invested in a cause.
